Was 2014 when Disney decided to stop putting effort into films for Children?
A brief rant of my opinion of the 1999 Annie film vs the 2014 version
A Cherished Classic
You know what was great about the 1999 Disney rendition of the Broadway show Annie, which I can’t say about the 2014 Disney film rendition of Annie? Well in 1999 Disney thought children deserved to be cultured and be introduced to an authentic Broadway play. Someone in charge also thought that children are smart enough to understand and enjoy the play even if it uses some outdated words that children don't hear anymore or words that might be confusing. Words such as, what is a “Mickey Finn?" I still don't know to this day, but I still enjoyed that movie and I felt cultured. It was as if literature and art were appreciated even if some parents might not agree with children singing about spiked drinks (okay I just googled it) . Alas not every kid had an iPhone to google “mickey finn” in those days. I cherish those simpler times. However, by 2014 they decided children are stupid and can only appreciate art if it's dumbed down, made more modern, and music tunes and words changed to words or tunes that Disney assumes a modern audience would be more familiar with. That's why nobody likes the 2014 version of Annie. Also Carmen Diaz as Miss Hannigan is a weird choice. But seriously, changing the tunes of beloved songs from full-sounding orchestra numbers to weird beats that sounded purchased from Traktrain was just the oddest and most insulting of choices. I get that they were trying to make a "modern version," but the better question is why? Why were they making a modern version? The original version was priceless on its own and the second question is if you think its worth the time to modernize it then why not make it better? Why not do it well? And if that wasn't enough every voice is so overly auto-tuned to the point that you wonder if anyone knows how to sing anymore? And yes that is how I really feel about the 2014 remake of Annie vs the 1999 masterful work of art version. Thanks for asking.
