This Is Halloween

Image
It's Halloween in China, where I currently live, but only the foreign teachers here know to celebrate this wacky holiday. I personally LOVE Halloween. It is a day where people celebrate creativity and let go of their inhibitions for one night to dress up, have fun and willingly do that which usually terrifies them. Its also a day like other holidays where we give to others. Some of us spend our Halloween celebrating innocence and fun of young children by passing out sweets to the neighborhood or taking our own children out Trick-OR-Treating. Some of us spend the day trying to get as scared as possible. Others go out and celebrate with friends with a party.            More and more I meet people who see no value to Halloween, just another useless holiday, but it is so much more than that. It’s the creativity of people trying to come up with the coolest costume or sca...

Intro to Twitter Promotion For Noobs

Image
Twitter is another networking site (in case you didn’t notice because you live under a rock or something) that is sweeping the nation, but just like with anything free and popular, people will find a way to make it monetarily valuable. Within seconds writers can promote their latest book or article and reach all their fans, artists can tweet when their concerts are coming out and businesses can use tweets to update followers whenever a new product is released. You can even use it to land a job by tweeting your interview questions and having all your friends answer them for you. I can't recall how many times I have been asked, “If your friends could describe you in three words, what would they say?” Well if you wait one minute for me to tweet that, I’ll tell you exactly what they’d say.    Last, but not least, stars can use twitter for unintentional or intentional publicity stunts. The most recent and memorable is Billy Joe Armstrong’s tweet about getting kicked off his fli...

My Friends are Like Monsters

New Challenge. Can I calm down when I have just filled myself up with social power? Any extroverts out there have the same problem? Spending time with people just winds me up so much like an energy drink that when I am trying to do homework I can not focus. I feel like I need to run a marathon to calm back down. I know what you're thinking, "So Coco why don't you go to the gym and calm down then do your work?" Well you know what, Mr. hypothetical logic person? Sometimes I just can't do that ok! It requires going home, changing, going outside or to the gym and moving, those are things I just don't feel like doing right now. Instead I just want to stay quietly in my friends room ranting to cyber space. Surely there must be another way to calm down when you just don't have the time to go to the gym/ don't have the nerve to start doing jumping jacks in front of your study partner. Maybe that's why I should study alone.

Finding My Adventure in the Great Wide Somewhere

Three years ago at my first Biola Missions conference I poured out my heart to God and told him " Lord , here I am, I will go anywhere and do anything for you, but I don't know where it is you want me to go." I remember feeling so anxious and overwhelmed with the angst one feels when they are waiting for something they desire above all; their calling. I wondered why God wouldn't just tell me and I as frustrated because I was ready and willing to move mountains. That was then. Now it is my fourth Missions Conference and I joyfully proclaim that I have found my calling. God is leading me to be a teacher and after I graduate I will leave to teach English in China. I still feel overwhelmed but now I am overwhelmed with joy because I could never have imagined God's calling to be so perfect and wonderful. Like many Christians I imagined God would send me somewhere unbearably difficult and un-fun. If I surrendered he would send me to some 3rd world country where I'd ...

The Matrix, Simulacra and Comedy?

Image
I won't be modest, I think I'm freakin hillarious. On those magic moments when others agree with me, it does occur every so often, life is good. I love making people laugh. But sadly many of my jokes go unnoticed, or are misunderstood. Take this one in my Critical Theory class today. The class is a dull fest. Honestly intellectual discussions on the theories of critical theorists, theorizing how we best should theorize literature and literature theories. What? Yep that's what we discuss everyday. I did find one good use for the study of these theories though. They inspire great ideas for movies, and thats where my joke came from. For instance "The Matrix", pretty much the most awesome action sci-fi flick of our time, was based of Jean Baudrillard's writing on "Simulacra". Who knew these writers actually got their crazy ideas from their boring college classes? Mrs. Park if your reading this, I am sorry, it's not you, really it's not. I...

I dance... Montage

Image
I like to dance. I sometimes watch youtube clips of movies over and over until I learn the dance moves, or sometimes Disney has those lovely learn the choreography clips. Anyway in such times as those I record my dancing so I can prove that at one point I learned the dance, since most likely I will forget it again. Anyway, I made a youtube video of my dancing and it became blocked by Germany! Pretty funny.  I am so proud. Watch the video by clicking on it on the sidebar of my blogs homepage under "Coco's Cameos"
